Residential Alcohol Treatment Center Treatment Programs
Addiction to any drug cannot be stopped just by deciding not to take the substance any more. History shows that individuals have relapsed and returned to the habit even after maintaining sobroety or cleanliness for many months or even years.
It is necessary to investigate the wide range of effects and root causes of substance abuse before any thought can be given to achieving recovery and absolute recovery longer term. Treatment that is successful needs to cover the patient’s emotional and mental health plus their physical condition. It needs to restore these elements to start with and enable the individual to keep them that way in the future.
Drug & Alcohol Recovery With The 12 Step Method
This type of treatment is very common in an alcohol treatment center. The twelve steps are a list of principals to adhere to for both addicts recovering addicts worldwide.
Based around faith, patients rely upon a higher power (or God) and use the power of spirituality. It is not exclusively applied to the Christian religion or a specific deity. However, the base element is that a power greater than the individual can help with their problems.
There are also dozens of different groups that can provide support and help to substance abusers and addicts. Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) founded in 1935 was one of the first that used the 12 step method. Other groups that employ the system include Cocaine Anonymous, Heroin Anonymous, Chrystal Meth Anonymous, Marijuana Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Pills Anonymous, and Narcotics Anonymous.
People involved in this method in drug and alcohol treatment centers keep in touch with these support groups after the drugs rehabilitation center has done its work and the centers will help their patients transition into the groups.
It is very important to note that if any process being followed must be adhered to by the individual, otherwise failure may well be the result.
Drug & Alcohol Rehab Using Alternative Methods
The twelve step program sees the drugs or alcohol dependence as ‘THE problem’ and deal with that problem and the sufferer should start to recover. Alternative treatment methods look at recovery differently. Dependence is seen as a big issue but there are other underlying issues that need to be dealt with at an alcohol treatment center.
The alternative programs rely on a range of plans for the individual. These plans are flexible, so if the patient is below or above the pace of the program then it can be adjusted specifically to the individual. There is no one size fits all approach here.
Long Term Treatment
The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that drugs rehabilitation center programs are more likely to be successful when they are at least 90 days in duration. In cases where folk have, for long periods of time, been abusing highly dangerous substances, longer treatment programs can be particularly beneficial. These can last between 120 and 180 days or even longer.
This long duration means that the patient is removed from the day to day life and influences that may have affected them and contributed to their addiction. Not only that, they can now be subject to structured and intensive treatment programs. And they may well feel comforted by the fact that they are not alone and others are also making it through the treatment.
It is not being realistic to expect an addict who has been abusing substances for perhaps half or more of their life to be cured in less than 28 days.
Phases Of Long Term Rehab Treatment
In this phase the patient stops using alcohol and/or drugs and several treatments are employed to help mitigate the inevitable withdrawal symptoms. These include medications (and also processes that can remove residual substances from the system) along with therapies such as massage, meditation, yoga etc.
Following the detox regime the underlying issues now need to be tackled otherwise the risk of relapse is very high. Counseling can be individual, in groups or both. Incentives can be used to help the individual keep substance free. Cognitive behavioral therapy is also included in some programs. The aim is to enable the patient to take control and prevent a return to substance abuse in the future.
Individuals may not feel confident in returning to society particularly if their abuse has stopped their education or the underlying reason for the abuse has not been dealt with. Their confidence can be increased by the provision of a range of life skill courses to help them reintegrate back into society.
It would be naive to assume that, despite intensive treatment at an alcohol treatment center, everything will be perfect following their residential stay. It is still possible for difficulties to be experienced following the return to normal life. It may be ‘normal life’ to non-addicts but not to ‘recovering addicts’. Aftercare support is really essential and can help the recoverer spot and resolve these difficulties, so relapse does not happen.
